I am a retired older lady living in an access-abled unit on the Glen Eden-Oratia border. Many years ago I owned a miniature poodle who thought he was a German Shepherd – we called him Fred, although his posh name was Black Sweep of Auden (out of Black Prince). The breeder called him Sweep – one of his littermates was Sooty.
Times and situations have changed and now I’d love a dog companion but tenancy rules forbid me having a dog permanently.
I don’t drive and have limited mobility, can’t run marathons but can certainly walk a dog locally along our private road – and there may be some possibility of future visits to the local dog play-park if required. This will need to be discussed with dog’s owner.
Perhaps the ideal situation would be to have a quiet dog who needs company, cuddles, affection and attention.
After an initial meet-and-greet visit (or two depending on the dog’s reaction) we might start with a couple of times a week. Then we can discuss what suits us both.
I could not adequately care for an excitable or very energetic dog.
Weekends and occasional overnights might be possible in exceptional circumstances but not on a regular basis as a result of strict tenancy rules (and I may be reported).
I have a toddler grand-daughter and although I don’t see her very often (every 2-3 months) it is important that any dog will accept this. She will not be allowed to be rough or annoy the dog but I see this as part of her controlled learning to be as gentle as she is with their very grumpy cat at home.
Although my family and I have owned cats (or they’ve owned us) in the past, plus birds, hamsters and mice, there are currently no other pets in my home.
